Volvo to Adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard for EVs
Volvo has decided to use the same charging connector for its electric vehicles (EVs) as Tesla does, known as the Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS).
This means that Volvo cars will be able to use Tesla’s charging stations, called Superchargers, which are available at around 12,000 locations across North America. Volvo is joining other major car manufacturers like Ford, General Motors, and Rivian, who have also partnered with Tesla and adopted its charging connector.
“As part of our journey to becoming fully electric by 2030, we want to make life with an electric car as easy as possible. Today, with this agreement, we’re taking a major step to remove this threshold for Volvo drivers in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.” –Volvo CEO Jim Rowan
Last month, Elon Musk and Jim Farley, the CEOs of Tesla and Ford, respectively, announced that Tesla would allow Ford to use its Supercharger Network. Soon after, General Motors also decided to adopt NACS, and Rivian followed their lead as well.
Thoughts
Tesla is convincing more and more car companies to use its charging network. They are currently the dominant player and have a strong potential for growth. This means we are likely to see a significant rise in the installation of Tesla Superchargers.
Volvo and Tesla have formed a partnership, which is a significant achievement for both companies. As part of this partnership, Volvo EV owners now have access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, which is a great benefit. This collaboration aligns with Tesla’s mission and goals.
“Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.” –Tesla
Elon Musk has consistently stated that Tesla is willing to assist other EV manufacturers. This indicates that the Tesla Supercharger network is likely to become the norm in North America and possibly worldwide in the future. It’s a matter of time before most cars can use NACS adapter to connect to the Supercharger network, making charging more convenient and accessible for EV owners everywhere.
